Meet Maestra Shelby!
1.) There are four areas of language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), so in our first session we'd set up goals and objectives of where you'd like to be linguistically, and I can explain my instructional process and beginners' course. This session would be 30 minutes at NO COST to you. This first meeting helps me get to know you as a learner with specific goals in mind so I can create the individualized instruction you need to succeed, and it also lets you see if you vibe with my instructional style and material.
2.) If you already have specific language goals, we can jump right into instruction! Just please give me a slight overview of your past experience and what you see yourself working on specifically, and I'll have appropriate content ready for you upon first meeting.
(3.) A possible third option would be an initial hour class, with the first 30 minutes being the introductory meeting, and the second 30 minutes beginning instruction.
PHONICS:
No matter what age, we all need to start with mastering the alphabet and its sounds. Half of the oral speaking battle is proper pronunciation, of course.
VERBS:
While Spanish may be a phonetic breeze in comparison to English, es lo opuesto (the opposite) when it comes to conjugating. But don’t worry - one tense at a time!
IMMERSION:
To truly attain fluency, eventual full immersion is necessary. Lessons begin with half immersion, then gradually transition to full immersion once a foundation of comprehension is attained.
In middle school, I had absolutely no desire to be a teacher; even the mere thought of doing such a job would've made me sneer. Yet I knew I had a passion for studying Spanish, so from eighth grade through my senior year of college I dedicated my time and learning to the language. As I failed upwards in fluency, I realized learning another language unlocks worlds of knowledge; I was slowly able to travel to new countries, experience new cultures, and connect with new people. Time passed, graduation came, and in the strange and unexpected way life intervenes, I suddenly found myself moving to Honduras as a sixth grade teacher.
While it was Spanish that stepped into my life as the first true passion, it didn't take long before my Honduran students showed me a second: education. Specifically, I fell in love with the art and action of teaching - helping someone understand and apply new information to better the quality of their life. Since then, I’ve used the last six years of a teaching career to hone my language and instructional skills, and am now determined to bring professional-quality Spanish classes to those with the desire to learn; hopefully, to you! You can be any age to grow in and attain true fluency in Spanish, and education can - and should - be tailored to the individual learner.
¡Bienvenidos a este gran viaje! Gracias por acompañarme; enseñar es el gran placer de mi vida.
